How has a person not seen Dawn of the Dead? And I don't mean Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames landing on zombie island and getting chomped bullshit ending Dawn of the Dead. I mean motherfucking Ken Foree killing ghouls with a Derringer REAL Dawn of the Dead. I realize that this isn't exactly everyone's Citizen Kane, or even everyone's Billy Madison, but among my circle of friends, it's canonical. The very idea of someone I regularly hang out with not having seen this movie is inconceivable, and yet, it's come up no less than twice in the past year. First it was Davekwon, and we corrected that as soon as I had knowledge of it.
Last night, however, I learned that Meryl had not seen this film. Not only that, she didn't know it existed. She's a fan of Night of the Living Dead, but didn't realize there were any more chapters to the story. I ask again... how does such a thing occur? Am I the first geek she's dated? That's an awful lot of pressure.
Anyway, to let you once again breathe easy, we watched Dawn of the Dead, and she even specifically picked out the extended cut. And yes, it was very much enjoyed. The one upside to coming across people who haven't seen the movie is that it gives me an excuse to watch it for the eight millionth time. Not that I need such an excuse. It's just nice to have it around.
I'm to be indoctrinated into the Lost cult tonight starting at 8, so if you don't see me post in the next few days, I've probably traded all my worldly goods for the first three seasons and holed up in my room. Send help.
Love, Andy

This is Hardcore, IS IT NOT!?
My ankle feels pretty good, but I'm also kind of zonked on meds. It's given me occasion to break out the cane of doom for those who remember the old days. It still smells faintly of maple syrup for reasons I'll never know. Unless the wood is maple. I guess that would possibly explain it.
I watched Hot Rod with Dave last night. I like me some Andy Samberg, but man this movie was wretched. Sorry, Dave. It was not good. Isla Fisher is a fine looking lass though. Yes, yes she is.
On the other side of the coin, we also watched the very first NWA Clash of the Champions, from 1988. Awesome. Completely awesome. It's weird to look back at how far ahead of the WWF style the NWA was at that time, at least in the Carolinas. Flair and Sting going 45 minutes, the Midnight Express and the Fantastics in a kick ass brawl, LEX LUGER of all people looking like a world beater, plus the hottest crowd I've ever seen. THIS IS MOTHERFUCKING PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING, and I love WWE 24/7 like any of my nieces or nephews.
The mighty Buckeyes of Ohio State have now won FIFTEEN games this season after struggling way too hard to put away lowly Penn State last night. Jamar Butler can't do ev'rythang, Bucks. Give him some help!
I just cracked all of my knuckles, and it felt great. Better get it out of system. Some people don't like that. Hopefully there will be more coherence tomorrow. This ought to be a fun spell check. Holla!

Ankle Snap!
I sprained my ankle on my way home from the barber shop this morning/early afternoon. I passed out walking up Patterson, and I came to almost immediately as I often do. However, I fell in an awkward position, thus spraining my ankle. I had imminent plans to visit a fly lady. THIS INCIDENT IS GAY WITH KIDS. Do you have any idea how not tough it sounds to explain to someone that you fell down and hurt your ankle? I should have made something up, like I was saving a kitten from a tree or fending off eight snarling pit bulls from attacking an old lady. Oh well.

Award Jerks Get One Right

Jenna accepting the SAG award for best comedy ensemble. There may have been other awards given out. DON'T CARE.
Of note from the red carpet... Angela Kinsey has been defiled!

Virginal conception, presumably.
I didn't even watch this award show and it's still eight billion times better than the loathsome Emmys were.
OHEY, we watched the Royal Rumble last night at Franz's pad, and it was mighty. Thanks to FRA the Rugged Man for manning up and offering his premises for the viewing. It was very strange to have females present who were actually somewhat interested in the goings on, I'll say that much. Big ups to Amanda and Cynthia for their efforts. Business as usual for myself, Keith, Franz, Andrew, and Kehn. It was a M.O.P. for sure. Drew even made a run-in at one point, reminding me very much of Sorry Keith Jackson from back in the day-o. See many of you for Wrestlemania, hopefully!
As for the content of the show itself, it was pretty good throughout the night, but then JOHN CENA returned from a four month absence, won the Royal Rumble, and it became awesome. Fie on all those MSG suckas who cheered with great vigor upon hearing his music, but then booed later. You're all marks, each and every one of you. Admit it! It's more fun over here being an admitted mark. Come on over and join in our reindeer games! Cena4Life~!

My girl, ready to liberate Eternia.

So Much for the City
I had a whole bit about the Mars "humanoid" photos and how we could probably conquer the entire planet with whistling sticks, and it was great. Problem is, I already told it to Adam and he didn't sell it very much, so I'm too salty to make my sweet joke public here. I repeat: blame Uncle Adam.
Despite Rick's best efforts, no further fog has lifted from the veil of whatever the fuck I was dreaming about the other night.
Apparently I'm going to watch the Miss America pageant tonight. I know, right? What's that all about? According to the official Miss America website, it's already on, and has been since 8:00 pm. Maybe we're going to watch a replay. I'll trust Mandy's expertise where this is concerned. Kind of weird to think how far that broadcast has fallen though. Saturday night on TLC. Yeesh.
I think I'm being shunned by up to two of the five boroughs. I can't get ahold of either Abe or Veronica. So, if either of you are reading this, show some love. Return a phone call.
April got LASIK surgery or some equivalent, but I keep forgetting that, so her subsequent MySpace journals and updates have left me scratching my head for a few seconds every time without fail. "Why would she be nervous about venturing out - OHHHHH, right. The eye thing." I don't know why I have a mental block on that event taking place.
U-God's opening line from Ain't Nuthin' To Fuck With is still my favorite opening line of any rap song ever. I mention this because that song just came on i-Tunes, and I find it impressive that anything on any of my lists has maintained its position over the course of nearly two months. Way to go, U-God!
Cody hasn't been mentioned on this here blog in a fair bit. The reason for this? He doesn't get on the AIM machine. He posts on Death Valley Driver with all of his real Internet friends, but leaves me in the dark. Chump.
I watched the first episode of Garth... Mernghi's(?) Darkplace the other day at Lee's house, and right after the fact, I loved it and couldn't wait to see more. After some reflection however, I don't know that I ever need to see it again. It's non-stop farce, and it's pretty much the same reason I can't watch The Colbert Report or Family Guy. Kind of satisfying every now and then, but there's just not enough substance there for me to invest 22 minutes in it on a regular basis. I guess that given it had a six-episode run the investment isn't too significant. Still, didn't bowl me over.
According to someone who will remain unnamed, I've been abusing the term "shook" of late. I'll admit that I've been using it with great frequency, but I truly believe the word has a broader application than this person... for the sake of the story, let's call him Groovy V, believes. Basically, Groovy V is hating on "shook", which may in fact make him the world's very first half-way crook. For shame.
By the way, the title of today's entry is literally meaningless in terms of the content found below it. I often hate trying to think of names for these things, and it's usually the last thing I come up with. It's weird, because when I was a kid writing short stories, I'd always think up a "cool" title first thing, and then try to shoehorn a story into it. This is a very silly way to go about things, I know, but I was young. Now it's a constant struggle to attach a title to anything I've written. It may be part of my fear of actually finishing a piece of writing, whatever it may be. Like giving it a name makes it real, and harder to distance myself from. So, back to the title of this entry, it's the name of The Thrills' first album, in case anyone was wondering.
Peace and love.

Seriously. WTF?
I keep a dream journal and a pen near my bed so I can scribble things down when I first wake up in the morning. Any dreams recounted on this blog, including here, here, here, here, and here, are direct results of me having this dream journal. It is an often invaluable tool. On the other hand, it's pretty much just as often completely useless. My method is to write down a few things when I wake up, then take a shower to get my day going, and come back to the journal and try to flesh out my notes. This is what I wrote yesterday morning, verbatim.
"Giraffe, Roald Dahl, WTF?"
I came back after my shower and had absolutely no memory of writing it down or what any of it meant. Not even the "WTF?" part. It was just gone, lost forever and ever.

Celebrities and the celebrity things they do
You know what I never mentioned? How awesome 30 Days of Night was. Davekwon and I went to see this last Tuesday, and it RULED. I liked this better than I'd ever hoped, and Josh Hartnett is the person I'd most like to chill with if I had to hide from vampires for a month. You could just get lost in those eyes, ya know.

Those eyes + Rihanna = 4TheWin.
Ryan Reynolds is going to marry Scarlett Johansson, apparently. This has failure written all over it. She's like, 23, and he's about 50. Okay, 31. Still. Although maybe he'll be like Paul Rudd and keep getting hotter as he edges towards 40. That's right. I own up to it. Paul Rudd: good looking man, and getting better all the time.
In an attempt to turn this blog entry around to a point where future generations won't assume I'm gay, I like football and cars. Also, velociraptors are sweet. Oh, and here's a beautiful woman. Hot! I meant "hot" woman!

I'M NOT GAY

CRISIS AVERTED
From Jenna's Myspace blog:
"Over Christmas, I saw a report in Star Magazine that I'm dating David Spade. Imagine my surprise as… I'VE NEVER MET David Spade! What a milestone! My first TOTALLY 100% UNTRUE tabloid report! I've always been very cynical when I hear celebrities say that a story is fake. I figure SOME part of every story must be true right? NO WAY! I have no idea how they are allowed to get away with stuff like that! My publicist said that no one ever called to check the facts of the David Spade story. Which seems strange to me. I have a minor in journalism and I was told to never run a story without 2 reliable sources to back it up. But, while we are on the subject, some other people I've never met are: Orlando Bloom, Colin Farrell, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Brad Pitt. Maybe I can fictionally date some of those guys too?"
Thank the Lord. Our long, blogtional nightmare is over.

ROFFLE NO.
In cringe-worthy film news, Face Full of Fulci took place last night, and it may very well have been proof of God Himself. After Amanda, Lucas, Andrew, Franz, Meryl, and myself slogged through Zombi II, The Beyond, and City of the Living Dead, I was beginning to feel depleted. Weary. In short, not wanting to subject myself to Zombi III at that late hour. But we had all made a committment to face the evil together, so I opened the case, and... EMPTY. Jesus loves me, this I know. Thanks to everyone for getting together, and big thanks to Lucas and Amanda for hosting the evening. I had a very nice time and hope to do it again with some slightly better viewing fare.
Until next time, I'm outtie 5k. PEACE.

More sickening syrup from this guy
Hell of a three days.
Face Full of Fulci is tonight, and I'm pumped. It's one thing to watch a movie expecting greatness and to be disappointed. It's quite another to, with your friends, watch a movie, ready to eviscerate it from the first frame. It's been too long, brothers! Jacks! Dudes!
Zombie thrillsville aside, things are just going well lately. School's great, I'm actually making good, new friends for the first time in a while (not that anything was wrong with the current set), and as I may have mentioned a few days ago, I'm in a good mood most of the time. Not that I'm an historically dour individual or anything, but I have my dark times, and thus far, 2008 has been mostly sunshine on loan from Len. I repeat: I did not steal anyone's sunshine.
It's Sunday, so I don't feel too obligated to entertain anyone while they're reading this at work or whatever, so I'm gonna cut out early.

Jenna: Still losing the fashion battle, but winning the war on my HEART.

Sameness
I realized something at Bourbon Street last night. Every Wednesday is exactly the same. Homogenization I expect from McDonalds, not hip hop night. Even the people I go with every week are the same. And it's not that I dislike any of them or want to spend less time with them. It's more like I want to spend less time with Blueprint and POS2. Plus, even with the people I go with I can barely hear them over the EXACT SAME SONGS THAT PLAY EVERY WEEK. So... I declare that I am ON A BREAK from hip hop night.
I came correct on the Scrabble board last night. Fate deemed it appropriate to bless me with "V" "X" and "Q" in the same game and I did the rest. Getting those three letters is pretty much like having Tom Brady as your quarterback though. You kind of just have to let things unfold and not give the game away. I have to refresh myself on the rules of Euchre today, so as not to be humiliated by Meryl, Mike and whoever else tonight. I keep confusing its rules with those of Setback, an infinitely superior game. Supposedly, there will also be a round of Trivial Pursuit tonight, but I'm starting to doubt that will actually occur. I hope it does, but I predict drunken shenanigans preventing it from taking place. I'd actually be into a very drunk game of Trivial Pursuit. That could last for days.
When white people put on their fake accent for talking like they're black, do you think it hurts their voice to maintain? What are they getting out of it? These people are idiots. I notice they mostly do it around other white people who are also pretending to be black. WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO IMPRESS? In this instance, it's two people putting on a complete facade, both of them knowing it, but neither backing off. What the Hell is wrong with you? At least when I say "ballin'", discuss the merits of "Supermanin' that O", or something equally atrocious, I fully acknowledge what a clueless white boy I am. These people I speak of, are not of my tribe. Danny Hoch had it spot on for once. VEX NOT MY GHOST.
See, I'm literary and stuff.

Happy Go Lucky Me
I'm in a really good mood lately. Just in general. I've been passing out more often, and more regularly dizzy than I've been in literally years, but I don't even care. As long as it doesn't impact school, bring it on. Because this guy is all about upside!

My shit eating grin totally owns Tom Delay's shit eating grin.

Real time truncation!
Face Full of Fulci appears to be a "go" for Sunday the 20th, so that should be great. I only have four Fulci DVDs, but actual eyes may have to be clawed out of actual heads if there were any more than that.
Big ups to Jason, who gave me the PS2 game Okami for my birthday. It started a little slowly, but now that I'm getting into it, it's just mindblowingly great. I always love it when I play a game that changes my perception of what is possible in a video game. Any game that allows you to a light a gloomy terrain by DRAWING THE SUN is okay with me.

Fail.
Speaking of Jason, he just informed me of an expansion for Fallout 2 that adds in all of the originally planned content the developers took out. My wood cannot be contained. Needless to say, I'll talk to you all later. I need to figure out how to make this work.
God bless.

7 of 11
As of January 10th, 2007, Walk Hard was still good, and America was still dumb for not realizing it. Also, Wes Anderson continues to impress me. With five feature films under his belt, I've never been disappointed in anything he's directed or written. I'm not terribly certain what was up with that Hotel Chevalier short. Maybe he didn't want it to break up the narrative of the feature. Or maybe he's just weird. Anyway, I like Wes Anderson. He's basically a much more consistent, less pretentious (not that it's much of a task) David O. Russell. Anderson's got an adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox up next, which ought to be awesome.
Since it was Studio 35, something had to go wrong, and both movies were riddled with delays early on. Once again I was told that there was NO WAY TO REWIND THE FILM AFTER IT STARTED. This still seems impossible to me.
I don't think I've mentioned this here, but I finally got a Playstation 2. I'm only seven or so years late to the party, but now I've got a great backlog of cheap games to go through. Spending most of my videogame time making and testing CPU logic for Fire Pro edits currently. That's right, people. I said CPU logic. I've got it going on.
I'm going to take a blogging break for at least Saturday and maybe Sunday, but here's a glimpse at the FUTURE.
Friday, January 11th: No plans. Holla at your boy.
Saturday, January 12th: Von Bondies at The Basement. No hollering needed, unless you also want to see the Von Bondies at The Basement.
Sunday, January 13th: MOTHERFUCKING TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. I have no idea why I'm so excited for this show, but I am. Maybe because it's being filmed on the same lot that the Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow was at, but that seems pretty minor, really. Anyway, I predict greatness!
Until next time, let's duet!

Blogging to my strengths
Septuagenarian quarterback Brett Favre is already talking about playing next season. Over the past few years it generally takes him well into the spring to figure out what he's going to do, but I guess when you're coming off one of the best seasons of your career and still alive in the playoffs, you're going to be a little more optimistic about things. I love Brett Favre. He's awesome.

The man himself, setting up for a Death Valley DRIVER. HaHaHaHaHa! Get it!? IT WORKS ON AS MANY AS TWO LEVELS!
In more sports news, Funky D, Davekwon and I watched the Ohio State/Iowa basketball game last night. The Buckeyes rested their starters for the last fifteen minutes of the game, and still ended up winning by thirty-one points. It was awesome. A Mystery White* even scored on a breakaway layup, one of the rarest occurrences in all of sports. At 12-3, these rebuilding Buckeyes are poised to conquer the Big Ten once more! ON TO MINNESOTA!
Oh, I have an idea for January 20th, seeing as the next day is Martin Luther King Day and whatnot. I want to do a Fulci mini-marathon of excruciating agony and hilarity. If you don't know how I feel about Mr. Fulci, well... read this. Now, I've spoken to Lucas about this, and he seemed game. However, we were both drinking when this was discussed, so he may not have any memory of this conversation taking place or of him agreeing to put himself through such an ordeal. I wouldn't blame him for balking. Fulci sucks. BUT... I still want to do it, because through brotherhood and quipping, we can overcome any film, or series of films. Come on, I don't own four of these abominations just so they can sit on a shelf and lower the awesome quotient of my DVD collection. So, who's in?

All downhill from here.
I'm not done talking about Fulci yet. Do you know what bugs me most of all about him? This isn't even his fault, but he's actually well regarded by a lot of supposed horror aficionados. I swear to God if videogames had been a popular license in the '70s and '80s, he'd have been Uwe Boll. Guaranteed. Oh, that reminds me. It would be extremely helpful if we could get one person who genuinely likes this clown to attend the marathon. I want to punchisize his arm whenever my rage becomes too great to contain.
Holy crap. Did you know that there's a (presumably) shitty British thrash band called Send More Paramedics? I fully endorse any band that takes their name from Return of the Living Dead. Apparently they dress on stage as zombies and luchadores. The boys in research will have to get back to me on whether or not any of them are zombie luchadores. Oh, they've split up as of October. That's too bad. That may have been the shortest lived fascination I've ever had with anything.
Sports, zombies, and tangentially related wrestling content. I think I've met my quota. I'm out, y'all! But I'll see you... some time!

On your knees, dog! As it should be.
*Mystery White: At least one, but not exceeding two players required on every Ohio State basketball team, invariably seated together at the end of the bench. Though they have no names, the Mystery Whites can occasionally be spotted performing basketball related activities, such as clapping and wearing warm-ups.

Remembering ridiculous video games.
We came, we broed, we conquered. Eight months later and it's still GOOD TIMES, JACK.
You know what's amazing? The movie Aladdin produced good, entirely different videogames on both the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. Jurassic Park can claim this as well. The Genesis version of Aladdin is a little less grounded than the SNES, as you're just murdering guards with a sword. At least on the Nintendo release you're stunning them with apples.
Does anyone remember the arcade game Combatribes? It's the only video game to ever cause me to cry. I was at United Skates of America, and I had put a quarter into the machine to play this stupid game, and I was denied. And tears streamed down my face. But not the easy tears of love. The harsh, bitter tears of twenty-five cents I'd never see again and an elusive game still unplayed. As it turns out, the game was pretty wack anyway.
Hey, did you know there were Graboids in Zombies Ate My Neighbors? That would be "Tremors monsters" for Andrew and Chops.
I didn't do much research for this blog entry. I just thought about old games for five minutes and wrote. HOLLA!

She's back!

Huh. Didn't think the last one was THAT bad.
But whatever.
Tonight is Broin' Down 8: Twenty-Bro-Eight, and as ever, here are your guidelines.
RULES OF BROIN'
Rule Number One: NO GURLZ ALLOWED. This is broin' down, not hoin' down. You can do that on your own time.
Rule Number Two: Speaking of GURLZ, they are either a ONE or a TWO. No exceptions.
Rule Number Three: Six bros are company, ten bros are a sausage fest.
Rule Number Four: Thou shalt not use any modifier in reference to any BROIN event other than BRO.
Unfortunately for the cause, I don't think we'll have eight bros tonight. Due to circumstances equal parts hilarious and unfortunate, I think we'll probably be topping out at six tonight. Which is fine, but Adam and I have had a dream for many months now to reach eight bros this month. A pity.
As noted back here, Ashley and I had a bad experience at the venerable Studio 35 the last time we attempted to patronize it. I'm throwing caution to the wind this Thursday, however, and using my two free passes to see The Darjeeling Limited and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. My arm candy for the night? The lovely and talented Andrew "Funky D" Patton. Now, I had actually thought about saving these passes for a real date, with like... a lady. However, I'm not seeing anyone right now, and while I considered a couple of options, they would have been first dates, and I don't think the first impression I want to make on a gal is that I'm COUPON BOY. Nothin' says gettin' some like ballin' on a budget. Anyhow, I kinda like Funky D, so he's in (it to win it).
And I'm off to mull haircut options. And then go to class. And then go to bro. And then go to sleep!

Post-birthday bloggins
Last night I dreamed I was at the movies, and I was hanging out in the lobby when I saw a stand-up for a new Hitchhiker's Guide movie. Jamie Foxx was playing Ford Prefect, and then there were a bunch of unrecognizable faces in the other roles. HATE HATE HATE.
In other news, thanks for coming to celebrate my birthday last night to those of you who did. To those of you who didn't, blame yourselves or event coordinator Andrew who did his best to not plan anything until the day of. Sometimes I'll mention that one of my friends was in rare form. It's an expression I like. However, yesterday, Jason was in RARE FORM. Just thought I'd mention that.
You haven't lived until you've seen Santino introducing clips on WWE 24/7.
I'm off to get a PS2 memory card and start renaming the Fire Pro roster. Holla holla holla.
I'll get back into the picture swing this week, but NOT TODAY SUCKERS.

HORRORS
I worried briefly that the transition to talking about bullshit again might be difficult, but thankfully, something OUTRAGED me this morning.
After reading some nice articles in the Columbus Dispatch about LeBron dominating fools and Marvin Lewis firing assistants, I was BLINDSIDED by a blurb about Jenna Fischer, and how she's now dating... DAVID SPADE.
CAN... NOT... USE.
When Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt, I was totally fine with that because Brad Pitt was awesome. But David Spade? DAVID SPADE? The guy who let Farley hold the bees? God damn it. You know, I'm aware that he's dated all kinds of hot chicks and whatnot, but seriously, come on now. This is even less probable than him scoring Sophie Marceau in that terrible lost dog movie. Will this ruin Jenna for me? I DON'T KNOW. I'm still hoping it's a dirty lie.

Much like The Office set, my heart is shut down.

Getting 2008 started on a light note
My Aunt Elsie died last night at Mount Carmel East. She suffered a stroke about two weeks back and had been unconscious ever since. She was finally taken off the respirator four days ago, and last night slipped away from lack of oxygen. There was no pain, and her brain activity was too low for their to have been any real awareness of what was happening to her. Her body just gave out after eighty-two years. To be honest, I'm relieved for her. She's not been well for any of this decade, really. I worry about my grandmother though. Elsie was her closest sister, and the only one still living in Ohio. For my grandma, death is the worst thing that can ever happen to a person, and I hate to see her in pain, struggling with this. I don't really know how she's going to cope with it in the long run. Those two were inseparable for their entire lives together. I tried to talk to her this morning, but everything I had to offer seemed so lame.
I've had loss in my life, as have we all, but not like that. Both parents, a brother in the war, one sister after another... it's the price of having a long life yourself. I'd better learn how to cope if I'm going to make it to 120.
In short, I love my Aunt Elsie, but I'm glad that she's at peace. I just have to figure out what I can do, if anything, to ease my grandma's suffering.
