An entry entirely for Dave

You're welcome, Kwon.

Happy Go Lucky Me

I'm in a really good mood lately. Just in general. I've been passing out more often, and more regularly dizzy than I've been in literally years, but I don't even care. As long as it doesn't impact school, bring it on. Because this guy is all about upside!

Real time truncation!

Face Full of Fulci appears to be a "go" for Sunday the 20th, so that should be great. I only have four Fulci DVDs, but actual eyes may have to be clawed out of actual heads if there were any more than that.

Big ups to Jason, who gave me the PS2 game Okami for my birthday. It started a little slowly, but now that I'm getting into it, it's just mindblowingly great. I always love it when I play a game that changes my perception of what is possible in a video game. Any game that allows you to a light a gloomy terrain by DRAWING THE SUN is okay with me.

Photobucket
Fail.

Speaking of Jason, he just informed me of an expansion for Fallout 2 that adds in all of the originally planned content the developers took out. My wood cannot be contained. Needless to say, I'll talk to you all later. I need to figure out how to make this work.

God bless.

7 of 11

As of January 10th, 2007, Walk Hard was still good, and America was still dumb for not realizing it. Also, Wes Anderson continues to impress me. With five feature films under his belt, I've never been disappointed in anything he's directed or written. I'm not terribly certain what was up with that Hotel Chevalier short. Maybe he didn't want it to break up the narrative of the feature. Or maybe he's just weird. Anyway, I like Wes Anderson. He's basically a much more consistent, less pretentious (not that it's much of a task) David O. Russell. Anderson's got an adaptation of Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr. Fox up next, which ought to be awesome.

Since it was Studio 35, something had to go wrong, and both movies were riddled with delays early on. Once again I was told that there was NO WAY TO REWIND THE FILM AFTER IT STARTED. This still seems impossible to me.

I don't think I've mentioned this here, but I finally got a Playstation 2. I'm only seven or so years late to the party, but now I've got a great backlog of cheap games to go through. Spending most of my videogame time making and testing CPU logic for Fire Pro edits currently. That's right, people. I said CPU logic. I've got it going on.

I'm going to take a blogging break for at least Saturday and maybe Sunday, but here's a glimpse at the FUTURE.

Friday, January 11th: No plans. Holla at your boy.

Saturday, January 12th: Von Bondies at The Basement. No hollering needed, unless you also want to see the Von Bondies at The Basement.

Sunday, January 13th: MOTHERFUCKING TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. I have no idea why I'm so excited for this show, but I am. Maybe because it's being filmed on the same lot that the Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow was at, but that seems pretty minor, really. Anyway, I predict greatness!

Until next time, let's duet!

Blogging to my strengths

Septuagenarian quarterback Brett Favre is already talking about playing next season. Over the past few years it generally takes him well into the spring to figure out what he's going to do, but I guess when you're coming off one of the best seasons of your career and still alive in the playoffs, you're going to be a little more optimistic about things. I love Brett Favre. He's awesome.

Death Valley DRIVER
The man himself, setting up for a Death Valley DRIVER. HaHaHaHaHa! Get it!? IT WORKS ON AS MANY AS TWO LEVELS!

In more sports news, Funky D, Davekwon and I watched the Ohio State/Iowa basketball game last night. The Buckeyes rested their starters for the last fifteen minutes of the game, and still ended up winning by thirty-one points. It was awesome. A Mystery White* even scored on a breakaway layup, one of the rarest occurrences in all of sports. At 12-3, these rebuilding Buckeyes are poised to conquer the Big Ten once more! ON TO MINNESOTA!

Oh, I have an idea for January 20th, seeing as the next day is Martin Luther King Day and whatnot. I want to do a Fulci mini-marathon of excruciating agony and hilarity. If you don't know how I feel about Mr. Fulci, well... read this. Now, I've spoken to Lucas about this, and he seemed game. However, we were both drinking when this was discussed, so he may not have any memory of this conversation taking place or of him agreeing to put himself through such an ordeal. I wouldn't blame him for balking. Fulci sucks. BUT... I still want to do it, because through brotherhood and quipping, we can overcome any film, or series of films. Come on, I don't own four of these abominations just so they can sit on a shelf and lower the awesome quotient of my DVD collection. So, who's in?

Photobucket
All downhill from here.

I'm not done talking about Fulci yet. Do you know what bugs me most of all about him? This isn't even his fault, but he's actually well regarded by a lot of supposed horror aficionados. I swear to God if videogames had been a popular license in the '70s and '80s, he'd have been Uwe Boll. Guaranteed. Oh, that reminds me. It would be extremely helpful if we could get one person who genuinely likes this clown to attend the marathon. I want to punchisize his arm whenever my rage becomes too great to contain.

Holy crap. Did you know that there's a (presumably) shitty British thrash band called Send More Paramedics? I fully endorse any band that takes their name from Return of the Living Dead. Apparently they dress on stage as zombies and luchadores. The boys in research will have to get back to me on whether or not any of them are zombie luchadores. Oh, they've split up as of October. That's too bad. That may have been the shortest lived fascination I've ever had with anything.

Sports, zombies, and tangentially related wrestling content. I think I've met my quota. I'm out, y'all! But I'll see you... some time!

Photobucket
On your knees, dog! As it should be.

*Mystery White: At least one, but not exceeding two players required on every Ohio State basketball team, invariably seated together at the end of the bench. Though they have no names, the Mystery Whites can occasionally be spotted performing basketball related activities, such as clapping and wearing warm-ups.

Remembering ridiculous video games.

We came, we broed, we conquered. Eight months later and it's still GOOD TIMES, JACK.

You know what's amazing? The movie Aladdin produced good, entirely different videogames on both the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. Jurassic Park can claim this as well. The Genesis version of Aladdin is a little less grounded than the SNES, as you're just murdering guards with a sword. At least on the Nintendo release you're stunning them with apples.

Does anyone remember the arcade game Combatribes? It's the only video game to ever cause me to cry. I was at United Skates of America, and I had put a quarter into the machine to play this stupid game, and I was denied. And tears streamed down my face. But not the easy tears of love. The harsh, bitter tears of twenty-five cents I'd never see again and an elusive game still unplayed. As it turns out, the game was pretty wack anyway.

Hey, did you know there were Graboids in Zombies Ate My Neighbors? That would be "Tremors monsters" for Andrew and Chops.

I didn't do much research for this blog entry. I just thought about old games for five minutes and wrote. HOLLA!

She's back!

Huh. Didn't think the last one was THAT bad.

But whatever.

Tonight is Broin' Down 8: Twenty-Bro-Eight, and as ever, here are your guidelines.

RULES OF BROIN'

Rule Number One: NO GURLZ ALLOWED. This is broin' down, not hoin' down. You can do that on your own time.

Rule Number Two: Speaking of GURLZ, they are either a ONE or a TWO. No exceptions.

Rule Number Three: Six bros are company, ten bros are a sausage fest.

Rule Number Four: Thou shalt not use any modifier in reference to any BROIN event other than BRO.

Unfortunately for the cause, I don't think we'll have eight bros tonight. Due to circumstances equal parts hilarious and unfortunate, I think we'll probably be topping out at six tonight. Which is fine, but Adam and I have had a dream for many months now to reach eight bros this month. A pity.

As noted back here, Ashley and I had a bad experience at the venerable Studio 35 the last time we attempted to patronize it. I'm throwing caution to the wind this Thursday, however, and using my two free passes to see The Darjeeling Limited and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. My arm candy for the night? The lovely and talented Andrew "Funky D" Patton. Now, I had actually thought about saving these passes for a real date, with like... a lady. However, I'm not seeing anyone right now, and while I considered a couple of options, they would have been first dates, and I don't think the first impression I want to make on a gal is that I'm COUPON BOY. Nothin' says gettin' some like ballin' on a budget. Anyhow, I kinda like Funky D, so he's in (it to win it).

And I'm off to mull haircut options. And then go to class. And then go to bro. And then go to sleep!

Post-birthday bloggins

Last night I dreamed I was at the movies, and I was hanging out in the lobby when I saw a stand-up for a new Hitchhiker's Guide movie. Jamie Foxx was playing Ford Prefect, and then there were a bunch of unrecognizable faces in the other roles. HATE HATE HATE.

In other news, thanks for coming to celebrate my birthday last night to those of you who did. To those of you who didn't, blame yourselves or event coordinator Andrew who did his best to not plan anything until the day of. Sometimes I'll mention that one of my friends was in rare form. It's an expression I like. However, yesterday, Jason was in RARE FORM. Just thought I'd mention that.

You haven't lived until you've seen Santino introducing clips on WWE 24/7.

I'm off to get a PS2 memory card and start renaming the Fire Pro roster. Holla holla holla.

I'll get back into the picture swing this week, but NOT TODAY SUCKERS.

HORRORS

I worried briefly that the transition to talking about bullshit again might be difficult, but thankfully, something OUTRAGED me this morning.

After reading some nice articles in the Columbus Dispatch about LeBron dominating fools and Marvin Lewis firing assistants, I was BLINDSIDED by a blurb about Jenna Fischer, and how she's now dating... DAVID SPADE.

CAN... NOT... USE.

When Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt, I was totally fine with that because Brad Pitt was awesome. But David Spade? DAVID SPADE? The guy who let Farley hold the bees? God damn it. You know, I'm aware that he's dated all kinds of hot chicks and whatnot, but seriously, come on now. This is even less probable than him scoring Sophie Marceau in that terrible lost dog movie. Will this ruin Jenna for me? I DON'T KNOW. I'm still hoping it's a dirty lie.

Getting 2008 started on a light note

My Aunt Elsie died last night at Mount Carmel East. She suffered a stroke about two weeks back and had been unconscious ever since. She was finally taken off the respirator four days ago, and last night slipped away from lack of oxygen. There was no pain, and her brain activity was too low for their to have been any real awareness of what was happening to her. Her body just gave out after eighty-two years. To be honest, I'm relieved for her. She's not been well for any of this decade, really. I worry about my grandmother though. Elsie was her closest sister, and the only one still living in Ohio. For my grandma, death is the worst thing that can ever happen to a person, and I hate to see her in pain, struggling with this. I don't really know how she's going to cope with it in the long run. Those two were inseparable for their entire lives together. I tried to talk to her this morning, but everything I had to offer seemed so lame.

I've had loss in my life, as have we all, but not like that. Both parents, a brother in the war, one sister after another... it's the price of having a long life yourself. I'd better learn how to cope if I'm going to make it to 120.

In short, I love my Aunt Elsie, but I'm glad that she's at peace. I just have to figure out what I can do, if anything, to ease my grandma's suffering.
